SWIHE homeschoolers have moved to a new web portal

This WordPress blog has served Southwestern Indiana Home Educators will for that last year. However when we set up here we knew that it was only a transitional place for us. We were looking for a web home that would serve our homeschool community and its diverse collection of co-ops and support groups.

We have found that place. SWIHE has moved its webhome to a service provided by homeschool-life.com. The URL www.swihe.org will take you there.

The new web portal provides both a public and private site. By registering for access to the private site, homeschoolers in SW Indiana and its tri-state region can interact with others, list calendar items, post their own announcements, buy and sell in the Classified ads, and receive a weekly email which details the activity on the web portal in the last week.

S.E. IL Homeschool Conference

Provision and Discipleship: The Next Generation Preparation Homeschool Conference

The South Eastern Illinois Christian Home Educators presents their first annual homeschool conference July 23rd-24th in Albion, IL. The theme is “Provision and Discipleship: The Next Generation Preparation Homeschool Conference.” Keynote Speakers are Doug Phillips and Wade Myers. Registration is currently open at the South Eastern Illinois Christian Home Educators site.

A free Grandparents Session is Saturday, July 24th from 11am-12pm. There are 2 breakout sessions in which you can choose which topic you want to attend. Topics for breakout sessions include Courtship, Entrepreneurship, Adoption, Discipleship & More. For full schedule of events and speaker session schedule please visit the conference site.

Little House Book Club

All girls in 3rd – 6th grade are invited to join our summer Little House Book Club where we will read the books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. What a great opportunity to encourage your daughter to read during the summer months. At club girls will participate in a book discussion, a hands-on activity related to the book and a bible devotion while they make new girl friends. Girls will learn to develop a love for history and reading as they learn about godly character traits.

Meetings are held on Friday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

on June, 4th Little Town on the Praire,
July 2nd, These Happy Golden Years,
and August 13th, The First Four Years.

Cost for new members is $10 at the first meeting which includes a club pin, bookmark, postcard picture of the Ingalls family and pledge. Ladies’ Book Discussion

Ladies of all ages are invited to join our summer book discussion. We will read Joyce Meyer’s book The Confident Woman which will help us develop the kind of confidence God wants His daughters to have so we can accomplish all He has planned for us.

Join our group for support and fellowship with other Christian women, many of whom educate their children at home. Our first book discussion will be held on Tuesday, May 25, at 8:45 a.m. at Bible Center Cathedral, 5000 First Ave. Childcare will be provided for ladies who have children. Dates for summer discussion are: June 15, June 29, July 20 and we will end on August 10 with a breakfast and movie. Joyce’s book may be purchased at any bookstore for about $15 each. Arts and Science Festival

The 14th annual Christian Homeschoolers Arts and Science Festival will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Calvary Temple, 5050 First Avenue from 5:15-9 p.m. The gym will be open at 5:15 p.m. for viewing of exhibits prior to the 6 p.m. start of the music, speech, and drama program. All homeschooled children, ages 5 and up, are eligible to participate in all events except music, which is open to ages 8 and up. All families are asked to bring 2 dozen cookies and a 2-liter (non-red) drink the night of the festival for the reception.

Registration Deadline: May 6, 2010

Turn in the following:

Participation Release (1 per family)
Enrollment Form (1 per child)
Fees: $7 per child, up to $28 per family. $3 extra fee if you need a hard copy of the festival brochure mailed to you. A few working scholarships are available, on a first come/first serve basis, if registration fees pose a financial hardship.
Graduating Seniors may exhibit and perform free of charge if they register by April 29!

Convention Retrospective

It’s also special because the event organizers are so committed to the homeschool community. They are serving for the love of homeschooling, and no other reason. They do an amazing job of meeting the needs of speakers, vendors, and attendees. . . . Another positive is the low price. There is no financial reason for anyone to have to miss this convention.

We love our vendors. Thanks for making our convention a success.

Formal: A Day in Paris

High school homeschoolers and homeschool graduates can enjoy French food, entertainment, and games at the Homeschool Formal. The fee is $20 if reservations are made two weeks before the formal. The event will be held Friday, April 23, 2010 at 6:00pm to midnight at Christian Fellowship Church.

Wear very modest formal attire only, bring very modest casual attire to change into for games in the gymnasium. Bring cash to purchase a professional picture package.

Neurodevelopment Seminar

Kay Ness, from Southeastern Neurodevelopmental Consulting Services will be in Evansville on Tuesday, April 13 for practical and informative seminar. If you are the parent of a struggling learner, a special needs child, or just a late bloomer, this seminar will give you tools to understand and help your child.

The brain is designed to move through specific neuro-developmental steps as it matures. In this seminar you will received a detailed overview of those steps. You will see where and how these steps are sometimes skipped or pathways blocked, leaving children with neurodevelopmental immaturities. Finally, you will be given practical steps which you can take to unblock pathways to overcome some of the most common neurodevelopmental issues.

With preregistration, the seminar is $10. If you don’t get your money’s worth of useful information, your admission fee will be returned.

Ohio Valley Birding Festival

The Evansville Audubon Society invites families out for a full day of birding fun as participants learn about birds and their habitats. FREE. Saturday, May 1, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. Workshops are scheduled on the hour. Family activities, games, and crafts are scheduled from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
